Users Discontinuing Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying these treatments should be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," described one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
